When Are You Getting a Proper Job

This message is for the reader whose own family do not count what they do as real work, and who has started needing their agreement before believing it themselves

They asked again on Sunday, and they were not being unkind.

When are you going to get a proper job. Or the softer version, which is worse: is there anything coming up that is more steady. Or the one from your aunt, who genuinely means well, about how you are so clever and could do anything.

Nobody in that kitchen was trying to hurt you. Every single one of them loves you, and two of them would lend you money tomorrow without asking what it was for.

And here is what has happened over about three years, and it is the reason I am writing this. You have started needing them to agree. Not wanting it. Needing it. There is a part of you that has made their opinion the thing that decides whether this is real, and you did not choose that and you cannot now simply undo it.

I am not going to set you against your family and I am not going to give you a line for the next gathering. I am going to show you a sentence Jesus said about his own house.

When Are You Getting a Proper Job

Save in his own house

There is a sentence in Mark that Jesus says about himself, and the list of places in it gets narrower as it goes.

He has been teaching in the place he grew up and it has not landed, and He names why in one line.

But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, save in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house. (Mark 6:4, King James Version)

You are in the one place where this has always been hardest, and it has never once meant the work was not real. Mark 6:4 names the hometown and the relatives and the household as the exact places where recognition does not arrive, and the Holy Spirit is the one who brings that to a crowded kitchen with a kettle going.

Look at the three steps. His own country. Among his own kin. In his own house. It narrows each time, and the last one is the smallest and the hardest.

He did not fix it. That is the part worth sitting with. He named it, and He went on working, and the people who had known Him longest remained unconvinced for a long time.

You have something that does not require recognition at home, and it has never once waited for it. The Spirit of God is the one who makes one sentence said in a hometown reach somebody holding a mug at a family gathering, and Mark 6:4 names the house as the hardest room and does not promise to change it.

What has quietly happened

Let me say plainly what has shifted, because the questions are not the real problem.

The questions have been the same for three years. What has changed is you. You used to find them annoying and now you find them destabilizing, and that means their agreement has become the floor you are standing on.

You were never standing on their agreement, and it has never once been the floor. The Holy Spirit is the one who shows a person where they have quietly started standing, and the written word names the household as the hardest room in Mark 6:4 without asking anybody to fix it.

And I have to say the other half, because it is true and leaving it out would be dishonest. One of them is probably right about something. Somebody in that kitchen has noticed that you are tired, or that you have not had a proper week off, or that you are carrying all of it alone.

That is worth hearing on its own, later, with nobody else in the room. It is not the same as the question about a proper job, and the two get tangled because they arrive in the same voice.

You are able to hear one true thing without handing over the whole of it, and those have never once been the same thing. His Spirit is the one who lets a person separate a fair word from a wrong one, and Mark 6:4 lets the unbelief at home stand while the work carries on.

One sentence, and then the work

So here is the exercise, and it is not for the gathering.

Say one true sentence about the work out loud, to yourself, alone, in a normal voice. Not an argument, not a rehearsal of what you should have said. One sentence, said once.

You are able to say a true sentence with no audience, and it has never once needed their agreement to be true. Mark 6:4 has the work continue in the face of a hometown's doubt, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes one plain sentence possible for somebody who has been waiting three years to be told.

Fourteen people paid me this month. This is my work. It is real, and it is hard, and I am doing it. Whatever the true sentence is for you.

Then go and do the work, today. That is the second half and it is the one that actually answers anything, because three years of showing up says something no sentence at a kitchen table ever has.

You were never required to be agreed with before you could work, and you are not required to now. The Spirit of God carries a person past the need for the one room that is hardest, and the written word names the house as the place recognition does not come in Mark 6:4.

The breakthrough

So here is what I believe is going out over somebody today.

You are doing real work, and God counts it whether that kitchen ever counts it or not. I am not setting you against people who love you and I am not going to hand you a line for Sunday. Mark 6:4 names the country and the kin and the house as the three places recognition does not arrive, and the work goes on anyway without the matter being resolved, and it is the Holy Spirit and not my saying so who turns that from a hometown scene into one sentence said out loud in a van.

And this, which is the word I came with. You have a true sentence of your own, and it has never once needed a witness in that room. The written word names the house as the hardest room in Mark 6:4 and does not promise to change it, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes one plain sentence possible for somebody who has been waiting three years for a word that may not come. God counts this work and that is enough for it to be real, and He is not honored by me waiting for my family to agree before it becomes true.

One sentence. Then go and work.

Declare this over yourself

  1. Question about a proper job, you were never unkind and you are not deciding anything. Mark 6:4 names the house as the hardest room, so by the Holy Spirit I say one true sentence in the name of Jesus.
  2. Need for my own family to agree, you were never the floor and you have no place under my feet. The written word names the country and the kin and the house and does not promise to change any of them, and by His Spirit I am done waiting to be told that this counts.
  3. Father, You said a prophet is not received in his own house, and You did not fix it and You did not explain it away. Your word says save in his own country, and among his own kin, so by Your Spirit I say one true sentence out loud today, and then I go and do the work.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
